Mentor Program

Founded in 2006, The Foundation is committed to supporting the educational needs of area students and has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships the last 16 years. Students receive recognition at our Annual Education Symposium where we strive to bridge industry and education by building an effective workforce.

After receiving their scholarships, students are placed in our Mentorship program where they are partnered with industry professionals from our community. The Mentor Program is designed to help our students succeed in school and in their careers.

Paula Mendoza

Words from our Foundation Chair:

“I have been a Mentor for the East End Chamber Foundation for a few years now and have found it to be one of the most rewarding contributions of my time.  The Foundation pairs us up with Mentees that either go to a familiar University or have similar career interests.  I can truly say that the Mentees that I have had are awesome young women; that have passion for their future, the drive to make a difference after their college experience, but most of all, are wanting to set a course for a better life for themselves and their families.  As a mentor, I think we are here mainly for support, because these young women already know what they want and what it takes to get there, they are just looking for a little reassurance that they can achieve it!”

WHY I AM A MENTOR:

“I have been involved with the East End Chamber of Commerce scholarship mentoring program for the past 2 years.  The reason why I believe that the EECOC program is so important is that it provides both the scholarship and mentoring to help with the transition to college.  This transition can be very difficult, and statistics show that not every incoming freshman student is successful.  I believe that the mentorship is critical as many of these students are the first generation in their family to attend college.  As a result, having a mentor provides them with someone to talk to that has been through this transition.  I also continue to believe that we need to support and encourage careers in science and engineering as it is a critical part of the economy in the East End of Houston, home to the largest petrochemical industrial areas in the world”

WHY I AM A MENTOR:

Being a mentor is a privilege…

As we entered college or got a profession, our mentors continue to guide. Our mentors serve as teachers, counselors, and an advocate.  He/she may suggest options for new avenues of education or provide ideas to work through workplace issues.  They also can perform as a sounding board for perplexing mentee concerns.  The mentor imparts knowledge, expertise and wisdom based on their actual experiences.   But it is not a one-way street.  Mentors benefit by passing on their life skills and professional know-how to the mentees, who value of the expertise presented.

WHY I AM A MENTOR:

“Being a mentor is very rewarding. I love hearing updates from my mentees who received a scholarship from the East End Chamber of Commerce Foundation and helping them when they need it. As a first-gen student myself I know how scary navigating life as a college student can be and how important mentorship is in helping students achieve their goals”
